Name/Ages of children: Emily is 6 and Trace is almost 2
When/with what did you start wearing? I bought my first carrier myself when I was pregnant with Emily back in 2008. It was a Jellybean Pouch Sling. I started to wear her in it when she was about a week old. I still have that carrier!
How did you first hear about/what first brought you to BWI B’ham? I first found out about BWI B’ham when we first moved here in 2012. I didn’t know anyone and was looking for things to do. Emily was almost 4 years old so we didn’t really wear anymore but we went to a meeting to two anyway. I didn’t go back for a year or so because I had gone back to work and then we were out of the state for a few months. I started coming back to meetings when Trace was about 3 weeks old.
Favorite part of volunteering with BWI? I love empowering new mothers! I love watching their faces light up once they learn how to use a carrier and realize that they can be close to and care for their babies and still be able to do other things in their daily lives! I also love the group we have; our volunteers and members are fantastic! They are genuinely helpful and so encouraging of one another.
What’s one thing you wish you could tell all new babywearers? We all start somewhere. I wasn’t always able to ninja wrap my babies on my back. Keep trying, ask for help and one day you’ll get it too!
If you could only have one carrier what would it be? If I could only have one carrier it would have to be a woven wrap! I love their versatility and support!
Most, in your opinion, underrated carrier in our library? That’s a hard one since ,most of our carriers have been getting lots of love lately! I guess I would have to say the short wraps. I think people tend to be intimidated by them.
Favorite thing to do while babywearing? ALL THE THINGS! If I had to narrow that down I guess I would say grocery shopping. I know, it sounds so mundane but now that Trace is a toddler he loves to help me shop. He gets to pick things off the shelf and put them in the cart and it is so cute!
Care to give a show out to someone (doesn’t have to be part of our group who inspired or helped you find the babywearing love? I have a great little group of online friends. We met during the times of Babycenter.com! I would have to say that they helped me find the babywearing love and we still keep in contact and try to meet up in real life once a year even though most of us are at the end of our wearing days! I love those ladies!
You have two weeks’ vacation with the kids- Where do you go? Spain! We spent a few days in Spain a few years ago and I loved it so much! It definitely wasn’t enough time and I’d love to go back!
If a friend suddenly dropped by to watch the kids for the rest of the day, what would you end up doing? I would probably go hide out at a coffee shop or the book store and read.
