Name/ages of children: Ella, 18 months
When/with what did you start wearing? I started wearing Ella shortly after she was born in a JJ Cole Agility carrier and Ergo with infant insert. I quickly moved on to a Maya Wrap ring sling and from there fell down the babywearing rabbit hole!
How did you first hear about/what first brought you to BWI B’ham? Natalie Short, one of our VBEs, was volunteering and attending at the time and invited me to come!
Favorite part of volunteering with BWI? It makes me so happy to help caregivers and see the encouragement and excitement on their faces when they've tried out babywearing for the first time. Sometimes, babywearing can be the game-changer that helps you parent older siblings, make a meal or eat one in peace and quiet, or just give you some quiet and special time with your little one. I love passing this on to others!
What’s one thing you wish you could tell all new babywearers? Don't give up! It can take a few tries to get the hang of things. If you don't like the carrier you're using, don't be afraid to ask for help. There may be some simple tweaks to get it working for you and baby! If not, there are some other great options out there.
If you could only have one carrier what would it be? A size 3 woven wrap. It wouldn't take up too much space, I could make a no-sew ring sling out of it, or I could do a two-shouldered back carry for more support if I needed to.
Most, in your opinion, underrated carrier in our library? Our mei tais, particularly the BB Tais. The are an affordable option with lots of bells and whistles. BB Tais have wide wrap straps that make them very comfortable and supportive, and I love the infant insert that comes with the BB Tai for a smaller baby. It also comes with a matching carrying bag!
What's the most memorable thing you've done while babywearing? When Ella was nine months, we went to the beach for her first beach trip. I wrapped her on my back and my husband and I went for an early morning walk on the beach. Within two minutes of us being down by the ocean, she was lulled to sleep. Every time we went for a walk she would fall asleep! It was such a peaceful and special time.
Care to give a shout out to someone (doesn’t have to be part of our group) who inspired you or helped you find the babywearing love? Again, Natalie Short, because she invited me to come to one of the meetings and because I was so impressed with her wrapping skills that I HAD to learn how!
If you had to pick one food to eat every single day for the rest of your life what would it be? No question at all, potato salad (Southern style)
What was your funniest BC (before children) misconception about raising kids? All of the "I won't ever..." statements I made. I've done everything I said I wouldn't do!
